Victoria Rusnock: Biography

My name is Victoria Rusnock and I have been teaching for 35 years. I was born and raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. I graduated from the University of Edinboro and did post graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh, University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, and the Citadel. We moved to South Carolina over 30 years ago. For the last 20 years I have been very fortunate to teach third grade at Stono Park Elementary School. Teaching third graders is awesome, rewarding, and there is never a dull moment!

I live in Mount Pleasant with my husband Jim and we have been married for 31 years. I have two daughters named Erica and Chelsea. Erica, who graduated form the College of Charleston, just moved into her own condo and got a yellow lab puppy named Maggie Mae. Chelsea is currently taking a year off of college to find herself!

In my spare time I love to read, kayak with my friends, and spend time with my family!

Classroom Connections:

Since the beginning of this course I have thought of several ways to use movie maker in my classroom as I become comfortable with the process. I feel that with time and luck I will be able to implement movie maker with my third grade students.

At the beginning of the year I will have all my students create a 1 minute video named "All About Me" to share with their classmates. This will include at least three pictures to describe them and what they like to do.

In my SC History classes I would like to implement this with my students in several different areas. I would like them to research the regions of South Carolina in teams, work on a storyboard, and then make a creative project in teams on their SC region. Other suggestion woul be to let students do research on Revolutionary War Heroes, Classes of People during the Antebellum Period, Civil War (North vs. South) etc.

In my science classes my students can also work on projects with movie maker using a story board to researh matter, types of rocks, sound, and types of animals, regions, or habitats/adaptations. They will also select music and narration that will go along with their projects.

Throughout my teaching career I have had to make several teaching changes in order to be successful in my classroom. In the beginning ( 30 years ago) a blackboard, chalk, bulletin boards, and creativity on my part were the only means of keeping kids engaged. How times have changed! I thought that with the computer teaching couldn't get any better but how wrong I was. With the invention of the smart boards and now movie maker we are finally able to work with students on their technology levels! What a wonderful and rewarding time to be a teacher!
